Microsoft’s Edge browser will support Google’s WebM video format soon

If you’ve been waiting for even more video support on the Microsoft Edge browser for Windows 10, you’ll be happy to know that Microsoft is working to add support for Google’s WebM video file format.

According to a post on UserVoice, Microsoft has said it’s “working on” supporting the video format, which acts as an alternative to the H.264 format — one of the most commonly used formats for the recording, compression, and distribution of video content on the web.

WebM is becoming a new standard for many websites, including YouTube so the announcement of the support is surely a welcome one.

WebM supports 4k content and the newest version of the codec reduces the format’s bit rate by about half. The inclusion into Microsoft Edge insures that the newest browser on the block retains compatibility with modern web standards. It also might even help Edge gain traction against browsers that already support the standard such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
